Venina’s work for the Pacific spans from Fiji to China

Pacific Trade Invest China has a new team member from Fiji. This month the Beijing office welcomed Venina Niumataiwalu as the latest Pacific Exchange Officer, to work in its Beijing office for the next three months on an important project tasked by the Pacific Islands Forum Economic Ministers.

Venina comes with a background in Development Studies and Economics, a graduate of the University of the South Pacific, and is Program Officer at the Pacific Islands Private Sector Organisation, where she coordinates private sector engagement with regional decision makers including the Pacific Islands Forum.

At the recent Forum Economic Ministers Meeting held in Suva in April, PTI China was tasked to develop and widely consult on a proposed Pacific Islands Sustainable Development Framework for interaction with Asian economies.

The project follows the endorsement by the Forum Economic Ministers of a proposal made to their Suva meeting by PTI China Trade Commissioner David Morris for a framework to communicate to Asian governments, financiers and investors the Pacific Islands regional priorities for sustainable, industry development.

Given the rapid growth and globalisation of Asian economies, with China a case in point, there is an increased interest in outward investment and finance for economic development but a giant knowledge and understanding gap.  It is envisaged the Pacific Islands Sustainable Development Framework will outline appropriate environmental, cultural, best practice business and other principles to be applied in developing regional projects.

Ms Niumataiwalu will work with the PTI network to consult widely amongst Pacific Islands governments, private sector, civil society and regional technical agencies over the next few months in the development of a draft Framework for interaction with Asian economies.
