Solomons’ cacao key to winning silver in London

Solomons Gold chocolate has put Solomon Islands cacao on the map.  Solomons Gold received a Silver Award at the prestigious Academy of Chocolate Awards 2017 in London, for their Smooth Dark 70 per cent Solomon Islands Single Origin chocolate in the Bean to Bar (under 80 per cent cacao solids) category.

More than 600 entries in the category were received from artisan chocolate makers around the globe.  Solomons Gold chocolate is made at C-Corp’s bespoke factory in New Zealand, only using the very best Solomon Islands cacao beans from local exporter C-Corp Limited.

C-Corp Limited Managing director Clive Carroll said, “We are excited about winning this award. We have worked so hard over the past three years to develop the Solomons Gold brand. The Award is testament to the massive contribution of the Solomons Gold team, from our growers, our dedicated staff in Honiara and our chocolate team in New Zealand.”

C-Corp started up its chocolate activities in 2014. They specially select and grade the best Solomon Islands dry beans they receive from growers at their Ranadi warehouse in Honiara, and then export to New Zealand. C-Corp pay growers a premium of 25 per cent over the ruling Honiara cacao price for any dry cacao beans which make the ‘Chocolate Grade’ mark. They not only make artisan chocolate, but also cacao products such as cocoa nibs and various chocolate products which go into healthy food shops and boutique food manufacturers.

General Manager Exports, Pacific Trade Invest (PTI) Australia, Jeremy Grennell said the award is a testament to the quality of cacao coming out the Solomon Islands and is excited to see what doors will open for Solomons Gold and Solomon cacao from this recognition.

PTI Australia has been following C-Corp’s journey closely, supporting Solomons Gold’s at Fine Foods Australia in 2016.

Meanwhile PTI New Zealand has worked with C-Corp’s New Zealand operations to promote their range at top-line food and beverage shows like Fine Food New Zealand 2016 and the Auckland Food Show, also in 2016.

Solomon’s Gold will receive its award at the chocolate industry awards in London on the 18 July 2017.
