Samaori: Blending coffee and Pacific cultures

Samaori Coffee is a first-time participant at the Auckland Food Show later this month, joining eight other Pacific food and beverage companies at Pacific Trade Invest (PTI) New Zealand’s stand at the show. A family business catering coffee carts to a wide range of indoor and outdoor events around Auckland – from popular street events to high end corporate ones, “Samaori is a blend of Samoan and Maori cultures,” says Jessica Rawiri, Director of the company.

“The Samaori brand is more than a local business – it is passion of culture,” she adds.

The company buys coffee directly from family owned coffee plantations in Alesia, in Samoa’s island of Upolu and cacao from family plantations in the village of Saleaula on the big island of Savaii.

“With passion for culture being a core value, Samaori has created our own coffee blend with the help of a good friend who contract roasts locally in Auckland,” said Ms Rawiri, who runs the business with her husband Paully Rawiri.

Samaori met with PTI NZ at the one-day Path to Pacific event in April this year held at The Cloud in downtown Auckland, as part of its flagship Path to Market programme.

“That particular event was a fantastic door opener and we value the opportunity and connections made with our other Pacific stall holders and new business networks,” Ms Rawiri said.

Samaori Coffee hopes to create a range that can be developed and sold not only in New Zealand by sourcing and adding local resources from the islands but also promote it to other Pacific countries as well.

Some of these coffees will be on display at the Auckland Food Show, as will be some of its cacao range. “Samaori have redesigned the look of traditional Samoan koko. I am working hard to get the products ready for the show,” Ms Rawiri said.

Responding to the soaring popularity of coffee machines in homes and offices, “Samaori have recently encapsulated 50 per cent coffee beans into Nespresso compatiable capsules,” according to Ms Rawiri.

Samaori is looking forward to participating in the show. “We are very honoured and privileged to be given such an opportunity to be a part of a great event and look forward to engaging with our community by promoting and showcasing not only our brand but to share our story and journey,” Ms Rawiri told Pacific Periscope.

Ms Rawiri will be at the Samaori booth at the PTI NZ stand at the Auckland Food Show.
