With COVID-19 upon us, it feels like it has been an age since we could travel.

At the end of February, when travel was still possible, a productive Joint Public Private Economic Mission to Fiji took place in Suva.

Led by Parliamentary Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Government of Japan Hon. Norihiro Nakayama, members from 19 Japanese private enterprises and organisations met with government officials and Fijian company representatives.

Personnel of Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO)  and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) were also invited to join, while the Pacific Islands Centre (PIC) played a key role, coordinating participants of private companies and helping to make  the mission the success it was.

Back in 2018, at the Eighth Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting, Pacific Forum Leaders had affirmed they would make continuous efforts to shape partnership between Japan and Pacific Island Countries by promoting trade, investment and tourism.

Based on that declaration, the mission has marked another important milestone in the growing trade and economic relations between Fiji and Japan through frank exchange of opinions among private and governmental participants and site inspection of the local enterprises.

It has also presented a great opportunity for the participants to consider the scheme which leads to promotion of exchange and expansion of trade and investment between Fiji and Japan.

During a preliminary seminar, Japanese businesspeople learnt about the business climate in Fiji, as well as the potentiality of trade and investment opportunities for investment and loans.

Based on the participants’ requirements, the PIC provided initial support in making appointments with local counterparts, aiming to set up and focus on individual meetings.

Participants also took part in a reception hosted by the Fiji and Japan Governments, and a Fiji-Japan trade and investment seminar, featuring presentations by government officials and private sector representatives of both countries as well as panel discussions.

Panellists included Director of PIC Roy Saito, Ms Psarad of Fiji’s Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism as well as Fijian Cacao’s Tomohito Zukoshi.
